I’ve been having fun playing with Fibonacci numbers lately. The number sequence, where each number is the sum of the prior two numbers (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, etc.), occurs commonly in nature, usually as a spiral shaped like this …
Think about pine cones, flower blossom whorls, and seashells.
It’s a pleasing pattern to the eye, and when used in the visual arts, it adds more interest than a simple symmetrical pattern would.
Here is some of my latest work. I used Fibonacci numbers as a guide for designing the proportions of the long stripes on the shawl. I also used the sequence as a guide when I changed colors.
And here are some towels from a different warp, but woven with the same principles in mind.
There are so many possibilities with this number sequence, I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface. Where’s the Fibonacci in your world?
That shawl is amazing!!!
