An Interlude for the Heroes

Like most of us, much of my mind and heart is with Ukraine these days. When I pay that extra money at the gas pump, I thank the universe that I’m not getting bombed into the Stone Age, have a safe place to live, and healthy, delicious food to eat. I haven’t been in this place of profound daily gratitude since the Big Texas Freeze of 2021…which was also a minimal inconvenience compared to what our Ukrainian friends are going through.

This wonderful obituary for a 101-year-old Belgian woman who, beginning at age nineteen, helped escort 135 allied airmen out of German-occupied France and Belgium, brought tears to my eyes. I’m a big fan of an interesting, well-written obituary. This is one of my favorites.

Rest In Peace, Monique Hanotte!
